9:00a-1:00p (4 hrs/$20.00) Adverse Child Experiences-ACES: Its Impact on Brain Development.
ACEs, a term used to describe all types of abuse, neglect, and other potentially traumatic experiences that occur to people under the age of 18. Linked to risky health behaviors, chronic health conditions, low life potential, and early death. As ACEs increase, so does the risk for negative outcomes. Children who are exposed in childhood to toxic experiences can affect their developing brain. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) may impact the cognitive, behavioral and physical development of the child. ACEs research helps us to understand the stress response impact on the brain and how we as teachers can intervene with simple teaching techniques. The Brain Architecture Game will be used to demonstrate experience that builds understanding of the powerful role of experiences on early brain development – what promotes it, what derails it, with what consequences for society. The Brain Architecture Game reveals a compelling perspective on the lifelong impact of early childhood experiences. In closing the group will discuss practical classroom strategies teachers can use to intervene and community resources for classroom and family intervention. Core Content #1 & #4

9:00a-1:00p (4 hrs/$20.00) Labels Are For Soup Cans, Not Children
Negative labels keep children in negative behaviors. Discover the power of positive, rather than negative labels. As teachers we know not to label children but what we say in our head and to our co-workers about children impacts our caregiving approach. Participants will assess and describe their personality and how it labels each of us by taking a personality quiz. We will define Labels and Self-Fulfilling Prophecy through lecture and video. We will classify negative and positive labels through charting and large group exercise. Smalls groups will tabulate alternative labels that create a new image yet still describe but in positive ways. Large group will describe ways to teach children their new labels in the classroom setting.
$1.50 added for each PayPal transaction.
